Onions for your Health

A host of health advantages have been attributed to the consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables – and onions are no exception. Scientists have conducted numerous studies to understand the specific compounds found in onions and the validity of including onions in the diet. In particular, fructans, flavonoids and organosulfur compounds are believed to have salutary effects on our health. One flavonoid - quercetin - is found in particularly high levels in onions and functions as an antioxidant. Whatever the compound, onion consumption has been studied for its beneficial effects on a variety of conditions – from cancer and heart disease, to cataracts and osteoporosis.
